Zayden Funny

He keeps bringing the funny, and if I don't write it down I'll forget! ;)

Just now we had this conversation:

Z: What is in his ear? (While lifting up Kramer's floppy ear and peeking in)
Me: I'm not sure.
Z: Maybe he has ham in there!
Me: He has ham in there?
Z: (Still looking in his ear) Yeah, I think so!

Picture Time!

Here are some recent favorite pictures!

This one was taken on St. Patrick's day. I worked, but it was a beautiful day and we had time to play outside for a little bit! (Ivy did have a different green outfit on during the day, but in this pic she is already for bed in her pj's)

Big Cheese:

This is Zayden showing off his big muscles from eating his vegetables. (He does this often!) :D

Sweet girl:

If you look closely you can see all EIGHT of her teeth. I can't believe at 8 months she has 8 teeth! The one on the bottom left (her left), just poked through, so it's harder to see.

Playing nicely:

Yes, they do play nicely often, but Z also can be a little rough with his sister. Most of the time he wants Ivy around ALL the time. However, today he was in an odd mood, and we had this conversation this morning:
Z: I don't want Ivy.
Me: What? Why not?
Z: I don't want Ivy.
Me: Well, what do you want me to do with her?
Z: Maybe, you can put her in a........ *whispered something*
Me: Put her in a what?
Z: Maybe, you can put her in a........ *more whispering*
Me: What?
Z: A ROCKET SHIP! Maybe you can put her in a rocket ship!
Me: Well wouldn't you miss her?
Z: Yes. :)

Zayden Funny

Zayden often says funny things from things he has heard in his books. Sleep deprivation makes me forget most, but he just said a funny 30 seconds ago, and the computer was beside me, so here it is. This is probably funnier if you have read, "Yertle the Turtle"

Zayden wrapped a blanket around himself, and looked at me and said. "I am king of the world!" He looked around a little and said, "I am king of all that I see. I am king of my boots and king of my T/tea/tee (?)!" ;)

Zayden Funny and Ivy Milestone

Today I was lecturing Zayden about being nicer to his sister. He then pointed a toy at me, and said, "You got to realize, you are a bad guy and I am a good guy!"

I also believe that Ivy has been saying "mama" this week. :D She only says it when she is crying, but it comes out clear and she looks right at me. She does this when she wants me. She cries, looks at me and says mama. Brian also told me she was looking around and crying and saying mama when I was at the store today. She hasn't said it yet while happy, so I'm not giving her full credit yet. ;)
Also she has said "dada", "bye" and "hi". Dada is just random babble. Hi and Bye have come out a couple of times when repeating us.

No new home for Asia this time.

This is the family that was chosen:

Home>
The Family
Meet The Family.

Inspired by a librarian, Bernard McFarland learned the power of books and the weight of words at an early age. Though raised in an impoverished family, Bernard McFarland overcame his obstacles with his thirst for knowledge and graduated from college. He then joined the military, and afterwards returned to his hometown with his three sons. In a community where violence was on the rise and kids were dropping out of school, Bernard set out on a mission to change those statistics and redirect the minds of the children in his hometown with “Pack House 2000,” a program dedicated to helping exercise the minds and expanding the dreams of these youngsters by forming reading groups and organizing field trips to libraries, museums and cultural events throughout the city despite Bernard having few resources.

As Bernard leads these efforts to help children realize their full potential, the McFarland home has deteriorated to an unsafe dwelling where his three boys, Courtney, Curtis, and Dominique share one room. There are holes throughout the ceiling, walls and floors, water damage in the sub-flooring and rusting pipes, plumbing, corroded wiring and crumbling drywall. Now Ty, his designers, The Estridge Companies and the Indianapolis community will fulfill the wish of this inspiring father and his family who has helped so many capture their dreams of a greater education and better life.

This is obviously a deserving family, but I admit I am bummed that Anne, Asia and family did not get the opportunity. We'll just have to nominate them again!

For Asia!

I want to write today about a family I know. Several years ago, I met an amazing little girl, named Asia, and an equally amazing woman named Anne (Asia's mom). I was Asia's Physical Therapist for a couple of years until we had a scheduling conflict when she started school. She then was seen by another PT. In the past few years I have also been the PT for 2 of Asia's sister's Janiece and Jayla.

Asia has Athetoid Cerebral Palsy. Asia's biological mother was unable to care for her. When she was 2 years old "the state" was having much trouble finding a home for Asia. The plan was for Asia to go to a nursing home (AT TWO). Anne, who is a nurse, met Asia and like everyone else who meets Asia fell in love with her and knew she should NOT live her life in a nursing home! Anne at the time was living alone. Her 2 daughters had moved out of the house, and her husband had left. Anne became a foster parent and brought Asia to her home. She then later adopted Asia and 2 of her biological sisters. Anne, who is still a single mom, continued to foster other children, and has adopted many other kids as well. She has always continued to work nights as a nurse, and care for her kids during the day. She does an excellent job with them all!!

Currently in their house there is Anne and 6 children. One of the children Anne has adopted turned 18 and has moved out. All of the children Anne has adopted have special needs or are the siblings of one of the children she has already adopted. Janiece and Asia both have Cerebral Palsy and are in wheelchairs. 2 of the other children have more cognitive and behavioral needs. She also adopted Janiece's younger biological sister when she was born cocaine positive.

Asia is one of those kids that captures your heart immediately. I am not sure exactly how old she is now, but I am thinking around 11 maybe. She is always smiling and always making everyone around her smile. She is very loving and VERY bright! Unfortunately her severe motor impairments don't allow her to be able to sit or stand independently, be independently mobile, or be able to verbalize much. However, she is able to say some words and has some signs. Sign lanugage and vocalizations are both difficult for her because of her motor impairments. Most of her communication though comes from her assistive communication device. I look at Asia and see this amazing, smart, beautiful girl full of so much personality who just unfortunately is trapped in her own body that doesn't work like it should. Luckily Anne saw that also when Asia was two and facing nursing home placement.

Anne sacrifices all that she is and has for her children. She has a modest home, but it is not equipped for children with special needs. Some adaptions have been made, but not enough. All of the bedroom's in Anne's home go to the other children. Anne turned her dining room into a bedroom for Janiece. Janiece is somewhat medically fragile, and needs much supervision. Anne either sleeps on the floor by Janiece or on a couch in the living room a few feet from Janiece. Sadly Asia usually sleeps with Anne as well, as there are not enough beds for all the children.

Anne has not even had her own bedroom for years. She also has her own challenges. A few years ago she had bilateral knee replacements. She also is beginning to have much difficulty transfering Janiece and Asia into their wheelchairs, bathtubs, etc. There is just not enough room in her home for assistive lifting devices. Also Asia is getting at the age where I know she would love to participate with more tasks around the house like cooking in the kitchen. However, their kitchen is too small for a wheelchair. Asia also has showed success in therapy with an electri wheelchair giving her independent mobility. However, there is just not enough room in their house for that. Anne drives a minivan, but it is not large enough for all the kids, so they can never all together go anywhere as an entire family. Despite all of this the children are VERY well taken care of, and they are all happy and living very good lives.

Myself and my coworkers have thought for years that Anne, Asia, and their family deserve an extreme home makeover as much as anyone else. We've all talked for years about nominating them. Well, a few months ago Extreme Home Make Over was looking for an Indianapolis family. The Occupational therapist, Melissa, who was Asia's current therapist wrote them a letter....a good letter! AND now Extreme Home Make Over is Here in Indianapolis getting ready to knock on someone's door!! I am literally on the edge of my seat and can barely think about anything else! I know they received many other letters, including one from another therapist I work with for another very deserving family ( a family also who has adopted many children...and one where I was the PT for 2 of their kids as well).

However, I just want Asia, Anne, and family to get this makeover SOO badly. I do know that the "knock on the door" will be on Saturday. I really don't know how I am going to be able to wait that long to find out. I also know that the family they choose here will go on to be aired in the 2 hour season finale. Biased me, can't think of a better family for a 2 hour seasone finale special!! I actually also have volunteered to help Sunday morning with whoever they choose, which will be a cool experience even if it isn't for the family I know and love.

So, if you are reading this, please cross your crossables and send really good thoughts out there that Asia, her siblings, and Anne get blessed with the home they need and deserve!!

Dinner Theater

Zayden can't seem to eat a meal lately without putting on a puppet show of sorts with his food. Here is a scene from tonight:

Breadstick: I am the big bad wolf, and I am going to eat you!
Chicken finger: That is not cool.

Zayden Funnies

Yesterday I asked Zayden if he wanted to sit on the potty. He said, "No I can't! There's dairy on it!"

The funniest part of this next story is the visual of our family, and how this is the norm every night! Last night Zayden was in his chef outfit. He then put a pirate hat on Ivy, and brought Brian a football helmet. He handed me a baseball cap and gloves to put on. We were all sitting on the floor in a circle in our "costumes". I said to Z, "You're a chef, Ivy is pirate, daddy is a football player, but who am I?" Z said, "You are some guy on the street."

Today I was throwing some food in the crockpot for dinner. Z was watching. He then asked for some celery. He had never had raw celery(but will eat it cooked). I let him have a piece. I gave him a big chunk. He looked down at it and said, "There's hair on it." I pulled off the little stringy pieces, and handed it back. He took a small bite, looked back at me and said, "I don't want THAT celery! It's sour!"

Today we were driving in the car, and I heard him doing his "guy talk".... the talk he does all day every day with his guys or animals and now even with his food. He will hold 2 guys or pieces of food and make them have big elaborate conversations with each other. I paused, wondering who could be "talking" because we didn't bring any guys with us, and he didn't have any food. I looked back and his fingers were "talking" to each other! :D

We were at the doctor's today, and the doctor stepped out. Z asked if he could sit in her stool. I let him. He then turned so he was facing the desk, put his hands on the desk and glanced at me and said, "You have an appointment?" He Looked down at the empty desk again, and said "Let's see, you have an appointment?" (I have NO idea where he heard that one!)

Moments with Zayden

Yesterday Zayden officially became 2 and a half. :D I can't believe how quickly time has gone. This past week, I have made a point to have more alone time with Zayden. I think he has been craving it, and actually I have too. Ivy is old enough now that she can be left for longer periods easier with her dad (which is good for them too), so I can spend more time with my little man again.
Wednesday, Brian was home from work, and I was able to take Zayden to the store alone. It was just a little thing, but we had sooo much fun. We were gone less than 2 hours, but it was such a great time. While we were driving there, I asked Zayden if he wanted to hear me honk my horn, and of course he did. So I honked it and we laughed. He wanted me to do it again, but I told him I couldn't do it when other cars were around as the people might get scared. So we would watch, and when neither of us saw a car I'd honk and we'd laugh. It was a silly game, but we both were laughing and having fun with it.
Then we go to the store, and I put him in the front of the cart, which in itself felt so weird. He hasn't sat there in so long as that became Ivy's seat. It was weird to have him facing me while we were shopping. We talked and talked and talked about all the things we saw and heard without any baby interuptions. It was really fun. Then I asked him if he wanted to go fast. He did, so I literally started running down the aisle pushing him in the cart (for about 3 seconds). We laughed, and he kept asking me to do that again too, and I did about 10 times.....until I was exhausted. Neither of us caring how silly we looked! ;)
We left the store, and decided to go get dinner to bring back home. I drove to a little deli, and saw that right beside the deli was a pet store. So, I took him in there first! We had A great time in there! We had so much fun looking at all the animals (including Nemo) and talking about them. Zayden kept trying to get me to open the cage the mice were in......but I definitely was not going to do THAT! Then we kind of pretended that we were interested in buying a puppy, and asked to play with a couple different puppies. Z chose a pomeranian, and we played with him first. I then chose a puggle for us to play with! That was also really fun!
We went to the sandwich shop and as I ordered I let Zayden run back and forth all through the restaurant (we were the ONLY customers in there). Zayden loved running back and forth and he wasn't hurting anything.
On our way home Zayden pleaded that we didn't go home most of the way, and when we got home he cried and cried and didn't want out of his seat. He was fine when we got inside and started eating, but it did prove to me that he really did crave that kind of attention!

Yesterday for his 2.5 birthday after some friends left I decided to take him to this place called Bounce N Play (while Ivy again stayed home with daddy). It is kiddie land with tons of inflatable things for him to bounce and run around on. He loved, loved, LOVED it! We haven't been in awhile so it was just so surprising to see how much more he can do now. There are these huge inflatable slides. Last time we were there I just instictually carried Z up the big ramped ladders to the top. Yesterday, I just let Zayden go on his own. He was able to climb to the top all by himself slowly but bravely (I didn't see any other kids as small as him doing it). He'd then come flying down the big slides with huge smiles and get to the bottom and flop all around like a fish out of water....in his state of bliss. It was really fun to watch him play and see how much he has "grown". My baby boy really isn't much of a baby anymore sadly.

Also at home I have been making a point to grab some alone time with him outside, or in the bath, or just reading in his room. I always point out that we are alone, and he seems to be happy with that, and we both have just really been enjoying each other a lot lately! It's been great!

I plan to make sure for now on that I set aside time for both kids to have some alone time with mommy as well as time for us all to be together....I think it's pretty important!

Now for a couple Zayden funnies:

My mother in law told me this first one. She asked Zayden if he was her boy. Zayden said, "no". MIL than asked who was going to be her boy then? Zayden said, "You can have Fintan!"

I made the big mistake of telling Zayden he was too little to do something last week,, and boy has he reminded us of that several times. First time was when Brian was putting him to bed one night, and Z didn't want to go to sleep. Brian told him he had to go to bed like a big boy, and Z's response was, "Mommy said I was little!" That phrase has now come out of his mouth many many times, when we ask him to be a big boy to do something. I don't know how many times he has looked at me and said, "YOU said I was little!"

The other day I was giving Zayden a bath and Zayden pointed at his belly and said, "Look mommy I have a fat belly!" I kept telling him he did not (I don't know where he learned that, because I honestly don't ever say stuff like that in front of him). He kept insisting that his belly was fat. Finally I said, "Zayden your belly is not fat, it is cute and full of muscles." Zayden looked at me with an irritated expression and said, "Ohhh please!!"

In the kitchen earlier, Zayden looked at me and said, "Mommy I eat you!" I looked at him confused and said, "what?" And he laughed and said, "I'm just teasing! Nevermind!"

As I was typing this post I was listening to Z play pretend with his guys and he had this conversation:
Guy 1: I'm the boss!
Guy 2: You're not the boss! Mommy is the boss!
Guy 1: No, I'm the boss!
Guy 2: You don't understand me!

Words of Wisdom by Zayden

A conversation we had just a moment ago:

Z: I want a cup of juice.
Me: We don't have juice.
Z: Why not?'
Me: I didn't buy any.
Z: What did you buy?
Me: I haven't bought anything for awhile.
Z: Why not?
Me: I have been really busy?
Z: Why busy?
Me: I had a very busy week. Life is busy. I've been busy!
Z: You don't need to be busy mommy! You just need to be happy.
Me: *long pause* You are right!

Mommy funnies!

Okay, Zayden has said so many FUNNY things lately that I should "write down", but I decided it's time I confess some of my own "funnies".
I blame my "funnies" on sleep deprivation. Anyway, some day when I let my kids read this I think they should be able to get the chance to laugh at me as much as I laugh at them.

Last night Ivy woke up for her first nursing. I heard her crying, and I stumbled into her room to nurse her half-asleep as I do every night. Her room was very dark. I'm laughing as I type this, because it is so ridiculous! I reached down to find her with my hands, and then picked her up. As I picked her up, I thought in my dream-like state that something wasn't right. Usually I can feel my hands under her arms (like in her armpits as I pick her up). However, I felt like I was holding onto an armless baby. Then she cried softly and I realized her cry was coming from a place below my hands. I started to sit her back down in her crib, and realized I sat her on her HEAD. I then helped her complete a somersault in the crib. Once she was safely back on her back, I picked her up...right-side up this time, and then sat down and nursed her like normal going back into my sleepy nursing state. I had forgotten all about this incident until late this afternoon during a meeting...and then started laughing while picturing my helpless daughter being picked up upside down in her sleepy and hungry state.

Also yesterday (yes it was a long day), I came home from sitting in a conference room all day listening to a lecture. That is exhausting for me. Brian was busy fixing our water heater, so I immediately took on mom duty as I walked in the door. The kids needed dinner. I grabbed Zayden and started to put him in 'his' booster seat. Zayden said, "Mommy, I don't want to sit here!!" I ignored him. He said it again very whiney, and I just simply told him "yes", and then he started crying and said it again. It then hit me. I sat him in Ivy's booster (which we call the baby chair.....it's slightly more baby-like than his "big boy" booster seat). I started laughing, and apologized as I moved him to his chair. Zayden's tears turned to laughter, and he said, "That was funny. You made me laugh mommy. "

And this one was probably over a month ago, but it still cracks me up when I think about it. One day I was busy nursing Ivy. Zayden kept climbing on me and yelling and just distracting Ivy. Without thinking I said very sternly to Zayden, "Zayden, Go lay down!!!" in my dog owner voice. ;) Z asked with a puzzled look, "why go lay down?" All I could do was laugh!

Zayden....Ivy.....I have to let you in on a little secret.......your mommy is nuts!!
